There's no wrong way to paint a rock! Since so many communities are doing hidden painted rock projects these days, I thought it would be fun to do a post with tons of inspiration for easy rock painting ideas for kids – preschool to tweens!

Rocks – Where to find them

Try finding them on public beaches, public places and even buying stones from local garden centers or rock yards. The ideal rock for painting are smooth rocks.

Smooth flat rock is the best type of rock to paint on. On the other hand, rocks with irregular forms might be a source of creative inspiration.

What is the best paint for rock painting?

There are many options of paint mediums that you can paint rocks with. Acrylic, watercolor pencils, alcohol inks, and oil based paint markers.

Acrylic paint is a good option, as it is durable and can be used on a variety of surfaces.

It is also non-toxic, making it a safe option for kids. You can buy acrylic craft paint at any store that has a craft section or visit my Amazon shop for our favorite brands.

Rock Painting Supplies

Rock painting is a fun and easy activity that doesn't require a lot of supplies. You will need:

  • Rocks (of course!)
  • Paint – acrylic paint works best.
  • Paintbrushes – you can use any type of brush, but I find that small brushes work the best.
  • Waterproof sealant – this is optional, but it will help your rock paintings last longer.

Helpful painting tips

  1. I wipe my paint brush on a paper towel or an old towel to remove extra water and clean them between colors too.
  2. The best way to make your colors to be vibrant and "pop" is to apply a base layer of paint to the top of the rocks.
  3. Highlight your painted rock by outlining your artwork with a darker color or black paint pen. It really makes your artwork stand out!
  4. It's a great idea to wait 24 hours before sealing your painted rocks and 48 hours for paint pouring rocks. Sealing your painted rocks too early can cause your paint to bleed.
  5. Use disposable drink cups with lids as a no-spill paint cups for kids. That way, it will hold the paint and paintbrush without all the mess and toss when done!
